Ian Malcolm Overview

Ian Malcolm is the main character of the Jurassic park movies. He is portrayed by Jeff Golblum. He has appeared not only in the movies but was also a main protagonist in both Novels, written by Michael Crichton. Malcolm is a scientist and is noticed as the ironic commentator. He was invited to the park as an insurance collector to point out any possible dangers that the park would have on any visitors. Ian Malcolm has also been mentioned to have written two books titled "How the World Will End" and "God Creates Dinosaurs" Ian is also a mathematician who is known for studying Chaos Theory.

 

Why is Ian Malcolm so Important

Ian Malcolm isn't only important because he is one of the main Characters, He's also important because he is portrayed to be the opposing character to John Hammond. While Hammond thought bringing dinosaurs back was a good Idea, Malcolm thought the opposite as he thought it was dangerous and just overall not smart. He had the thought of "just because you can doesn't mean you should." He is constantly telling Hammond that it's dangerous, the cages and ropes don't defy the laws of nature, especially with the carnivorous dinosaurs. He believes that Humans can't control nature.

 

 

Ian Malcolm Injuries

Ian Malcolm got injured by a T-rex after Nedry shut off the power to the park. The T Rex chases him to the bathroom, where he is tossed several feet in the air. He inevitably injures his leg and becomes unconscious, but he was lucky enough to survive the incident. It is mentioned that he dies from his injuries, however; Crichton decided to scrap the idea as his death was premature and he was able to be resuscitated in order for him to be in the next part of Jurassic Park as the Ironic Commentator.

 

Ian Malcolm is the Hero

You're probably wondering how he's the hero of the show. Wel h shows a lot of acts o bravery. He tried to stop the events before they started, however he didn't get listened to. He was the voice of reason, telling the owner of the park that it wasn't safe. His warnings about potential dangers ended up proving correct. While he may not fit the stereotype of Hero, he sure did end up becoming one with his intelligence, courage, and unwavering belief that humans can not control nature.

 

Ian Malcolm: Book vs. Screen

Ian Malcolm remains mostly the same in both the book and the movie.There are still a few differences in his character. The book gives a more detailed description of his appearance and focuses a lot more on his thoughts, fears, and motivations. He is a lot more center to the plot and it goes a lot more into his perspective of things. While the movie Is more focused on his visual impact, action and dialogue. He often shares the spotlight with the other characters a lot more than he did in the book. His iconic line, “Life finds a way.” shows up in both however, it is used a lot more in the movie to keep it memorable and to provide a higher cinematic and consistent effect. Both the books and movies are great but the book portrays a lot better perspective on Ian Malcolm as a character overall.
